Yakshis were ancient Indian spirit beings mentioned in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain literature. They were inhabitants of the subterranean earth and protectors of treasures. Yakshis were often recognized as “mother-goddesses,” and may date back to the Indus Valley civilization (2500–1750 B.C.), the earliest known urban culture of India. The Yakshi Series honors their namesake through the energetic symbolism of Nature and in the human world, with all its swirling transformations.
